On the night of March 8-9, Valve announced The International 2024! It will take place in September in Copenhagen, Denmark. The exact dates haven’t been shared yet, but the format is already known. Here’s what the developers said.
Banners are being cleaned, pipes are being tested, and the battlefield is being cleared. The Ancient Ones are being fixed up, and even the forest air is getting the special treatment we paid for.
In other words, everything is getting ready for The International to return to Europe. In September, the best Dota 2 teams from around the world will compete for the Aegis at the Copenhagen Royal Arena.

The International 2024: What to Expect?
Just like in the early years of The International, some of the sixteen teams will qualify through open and regional competitions, while others will receive direct invitations based on their performance throughout the year. The announcement of the invited teams will be closer to the event.
This year is going to be eventful! The schedule is already full, with half a dozen major tournaments announced, and more to come. There will be competitions in studios and arenas across Europe, Asia, South America, and the Middle East. There are even rumors about the return of Midas Mode! The more teams that participate, the better it is, as interregional tournaments give us more valuable information than intra regional ones. Moreover, the tournaments with qualifiers are more informative than those with only invitations.
Main Facts About The International
The International is an annual Dota 2 esports tournament organized by Valve, the game developer. The first tournament took place in 2011 at Gamescom, where Dota 2 was introduced. The prize pool was $1.6 million – it was a huge surprise for many players who couldn’t believe such big prizes could be in esports.
Usually, 16 to 18 teams from six main regions – North America, South America, Europe, Southeast Asia, China, and the CIS – compete in The International. A unique feature of the tournament is its prize fund, which is partly raised through crowdfunding by selling a Battle Pass. Dota 2 fans buy additional in-game content, and 25% of the money from these sales goes into the prize pool, which starts at $1.6 million. Each year, The International breaks records for the largest prize pool in esports.
Besides the large cash prize, the winning team receives the main trophy, the Aegis. The names of the winning players are engraved on the back of the Aegis, which is made by Weta Workshop. The Aegis is heavy enough due to its bronze and silver construction. The winners also get The International rings. Sometimes, Valve gives high-level Battle Pass holders miniature replicas of the Aegis.
